A day in the life

You begin your shift by setting up a vertical machining center to cut metallic materials. You verify your work offsets, touch off tools, and review the G- and M-code blocks you’ll be running. The first article is inspected with micrometers, calipers, comparators, and gauges against the documented process. Throughout the job, you track tool wear, replace inserts before they fail, and keep the workstation aligned with 5S standards. When a tool chatters or a finish drifts, you diagnose the root cause, make adjustments, and keep parts moving. Before closing out the order, you complete in-process checks and a final inspection, deburr any edges, and note process improvements for the next run.

Core responsibilities

• Set up and operate CNC vertical mills to machine metallic components.
• Manage tool life, monitor wear, and change tooling proactively.
• Read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, and engineering specifications.
• Complete first-article, in-process, and final inspections using micrometers, calipers, comparators, and gauges per documented procedures.
• Perform routine operator maintenance on machines and tooling.
• Troubleshoot and correct equipment and tool issues to protect quality and throughput.
• Deburr and perform basic rework on in-process parts as needed.
• Recommend process optimizations and continuous improvements.
• Maintain a clean, organized workstation in accordance with 5S.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of hands-on CNC milling experience.
• High School Diploma or GED.
• Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
• Comfortable with basic shop math.
• Required: ability to read/understand G- and M-code.
• Familiar with general safety and quality systems.
• Team-oriented; willing to assist across manufacturing tasks.

Preferred experience

• Background in aerospace machining.
• Demonstrated tool life management.
• Skilled at reading, writing, and interpreting work instructions, prints, and specifications.
• Experience setting up 3-axis mills.
• Ability to interpret CMM reports.
