Job Description

The City of Rogers is accepting applications for an internship position within the Community Development Department.  The position will have the opportunity to assist in the review of development projects, conduct research, draft ordinances, and provide recommendations on code changes, assist with the 2050 Comprehensive Plan update, assist with economic development functions, and more. Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor’s Degree or substantial completion of degree coursework in planning, public policy, urban studies, or a closely related field.

JOB SUMMARY

Non-supervisory position that performs a variety of work related to planning and economic development. The individual will gain experience working directly on development projects and will also provide administrative support, including but not limited to:  coordinating administrative community development details, preparing correspondence, economic development, planning, communications, marketing, and collection and organization of information.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Conduct research in support of the City’s community development activities, with an emphasis on economic development, zoning, and planning.

    • Assists with conducting business retention & expansion visits and entering information into a database.

    • Assist in development follow-up including coordination of development agreements, escrows, and letters of credit.

    • Assist with coordinating city-led business grant opportunities and administering outside agency grant award.

    • Assists with the interpretation of City Code as it relates to planning and zoning matters

    • Assists with the preparation of zoning letters as requested

    • Assists with the processing of planning and zoning applications, including the publication and dissemination of public hearing notices

    • Assist in the communication and marketing of community and economic development projects and initiatives.

    • Assist in data/information gathering related to the Comprehensive Plan and periodic updates of the plan.

    • Assist in the review of development proposals for compliance with City regulations

    • Other duties as assigned by the Community Development Director, City Planner, or City Administrator

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is generally performed in an office environment with standard office equipment and furnishings available. Occasionally, may be required to attend off-site trainings or meetings.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must have the ability to read and discern visual images on a variety of media.

  • Must have the ability to operate a personal computer and applicable software (word processing, spreadsheet, accounting), 10-key adding machine or calculator, fax, copier, and telephone

  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time

  • May, occasionally, have to lift 25 pounds or more

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

·       High school diploma or equivalent

·       Bachelor’s degree OR substantial completion of degree coursework in planning, community development, public policy, urban studies, or a closely related field

·       Experience with Microsoft Office and Adobe products.

·       Valid Minnesota driver’s license

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

  • Prior exposure or experience to local government work.

  • Recent graduate or enrolled in a graduate-level program related to public administration, public policy, urban studies, or a closely related field.

  • Prior experience in communications and/or marketing.

  • Experience working with GIS systems.

  • Experience working with the public or knowledge in customer service.
