Pennington Biomedical Research Center is a research campus in the Louisiana State University System. Over the past three decades, Pennington Biomedical has become a global leader in nutrition research and metabolic health. Located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the Center's mission is to discover the triggers of chronic diseases through innovative research that improves human health across the lifespan.
At the forefront of medical discovery as it relates to understanding the causes of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and dementia, Pennington Biomedical is affiliated with Louisiana State University and conducts basic, clinical, and population research. Research
Over the last 30 years, Pennington Biomedical's world-renowned scientists have made remarkable discoveries that have improved the way Americans exercise, eat, and age and greatly advanced society's understanding of obesity, diabetes, dementia, and other chronic diseases. Researchers have contributed to nearly every obesity and diabetes drug on the market, developed obesity and lifestyle interventions, and are a leading provider of nutrition science for the U.S. military.
The Center's 550+ employees perform research activities across 752,000 square feet of state-of-the-art laboratories, clinics, conference spaces, and offices located on a tranquil 222-acre urban campus in Baton Rouge. The Center's research enterprise includes approximately 65 scientists and more than 20 postdoctoral fellows who comprise a network of 44 laboratories supported by lab techs, nurses, dietitians, and support personnel, and 16 highly specialized core service facilities. Research at Pennington Biomedical covers ten areas: obesity; diabetes; epidemiology & prevention; genomics & molecular genetics; neurobiology; neurodegeneration; nutrient sensing & signaling; cancer; physical activity & health; and developmental biology.
Job Summary:
The position will be split 50% for medical supervision and implementation of clinical trials (Medical Investigator
and/or Principal Investigator) and 50% for independent biomedical research. The role of Medical Investigator
requires oversight of clinical trials, performance of safety medical reviews, participating in the development of
clinical trials, and overseeing the medical aspects of clinical research projects initiated by non-physician
scientists at Pennington Biomedical.
Job Responsibilities:
Research:
- Develop over time your own independent and externally funded in endocrinology and metabolism (e.g., NIH
grants, private foundation grants, and investigator-initiated pharmaceutical grants).
- Publish your research in high impact journals.
- Actively collaborate with other PIs at Pennington Biomedical.
- Participate in other scholarly activities including, grant reviews, participation in professional societies, and
presentations at local, national, and international meetings.
Medical Investigator/Physician Role:
- Provide coverage within the clinical research unit in support of active studies.
- Serve as a medical investigator on funded projects.
- Provide on-call duty for the unit in coordination with medical staff.
- Provide service time in a Pennington Biomedical medical clinic if required by the Chief Medical Officer and the Executive Director.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education Level: MD or DO
Years of Experience: 3-5 years
Certifications/Licenses:
• MD, Board Certified, ACLS, BLS
Specific Experience:
• 3-5 years post-medical residence.
• Contingent on successful licensure to practice medicine in the State of Louisiana. Also contingent on obtaining
privileges at all practice sites that will utilize your clinical services.
• Board Certification: Internal Medicine or Family Practice
• Strong oral, written communication and presentation skills
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience in a research setting-implementation of Clinical Trials for investigational drugs and/or biologics.
• Board Certification: Endocrinology or Obesity Medicine
